The Future of Electric Transport Is Practical

A motor car is not a political statement when it fails to start on a cold morning or needs to cover 300 miles before teatime. It is a working tool, a freedom and, for many people, a pleasure. The future of electric transport will therefore be settled not by slogans from either enthusiasts or sceptics, but by whether electric vehicles serve ordinary journeys reliably, affordably and without unreasonable complication.

I have owned more than 39 cars over five decades, including the powerful Jaguars, Daimlers and six-cylinder Volvos that were part of a different motoring age. I understand the appeal of a substantial engine and the sense of occasion it can provide. But retirement changes the calculation. For local and regional travel, an electric car is quiet, comfortable, economical to run and well suited to the job. That is not a moral victory over petrol. It is simply horses for courses.

The future of electric transport is not one vehicle

The frequent mistake in this debate is to speak of transport as though every journey were the same. A household doing school runs, shopping and occasional visits to family has different requirements from a sales representative driving across Britain, a farmer towing equipment, a taxi operator, or a haulier moving goods to a port. Battery electric power will be highly effective in some of these roles and more difficult in others.

Private cars are the obvious early market because they spend most of their time parked. A driver with off-street parking can charge at home, wake to a full battery and rarely visit a public charging point. For that person, the supposed inconvenience of charging is often less than the weekly habit of calling at a filling station. The arithmetic is especially persuasive where electricity can be bought overnight at a lower tariff.

The position is less favourable for the flat-dweller, the terraced-house resident without a driveway and the person who must depend on public chargers. These motorists should not be treated as an afterthought. If electric motoring is available only to those with a garage or private drive, it will rightly be seen as a policy designed around the fortunate. Kerbside charging, workplace provision and dependable local charging hubs are not luxuries. They are the practical conditions of a fair transition.

Heavy lorries present a separate engineering and commercial problem. Batteries are heavy, charging takes time, and payload and operating schedules matter enormously. Short-haul distribution, municipal fleets and depot-based vehicles can electrify steadily because they return to base. Long-distance articulated lorries may require a mixture of larger batteries, very high-power charging, alternative fuels or routes designed around charging opportunities. It would be unwise to promise one answer before operational evidence has accumulated.

Charging must become boringly dependable

The motor industry has spent more than a century making refuelling simple. Electric transport will earn public confidence only when charging is equally routine. The issue is not merely the number of chargers installed. A large number of broken, poorly located or awkwardly paid-for chargers is not a transport system.

A useful public network needs clear pricing, working equipment, adequate lighting, sensible bays and rapid assistance when something goes wrong. Motorists should be able to pay without downloading several applications or joining a separate club for each operator. Contactless payment has become normal in many parts of life; it ought to be normal at a charging point.

Speed also needs honest treatment. Most charging should happen where vehicles are already stationary: at home, at work, at hotels, at depots and in car parks. This is cheaper for the grid and more convenient for the driver. Rapid chargers are essential on major routes, but building an entire system around the expectation that every driver will charge from near-empty to full during a brief stop would be costly and inefficient.

Range anxiety has often been discussed as though it were a permanent feature of electric cars. In reality, it is partly a consequence of unfamiliarity and partly a rational response to patchy infrastructure. A driver who knows that a charger at the next service area may be occupied, out of order or difficult to use has a legitimate concern. Reliability will reduce anxiety more effectively than advertising ever can.

The grid is the less glamorous part of the story

Electric vehicles move energy demand from petrol stations and oil terminals to homes, workplaces and charging sites. That does not mean the national grid is incapable of coping. It does mean investment and competent management are required, particularly on local networks where many vehicles may charge at the same time.

Smart charging offers a sensible route forward. A car parked overnight does not normally need to begin charging at six o’clock, when homes are cooking, heating and using electricity heavily. It can charge later, when demand falls or renewable generation is plentiful. Tariffs can encourage this behaviour, provided they are clear and do not punish people who lack a driveway or flexible routines.

There is a longer-term opportunity here. Electric car batteries may eventually help balance the system by returning power at times of high demand. The technical possibilities are real, but the consumer proposition must be straightforward. Few owners will volunteer their battery unless they are properly paid, their mobility is protected and warranties are clear. As with any new arrangement, confidence will depend on contracts as much as technology.

Policy should set direction, not manufacture resentment

Britain needs a stable transport policy. Manufacturers cannot plan factories and supply chains around deadlines that appear firm one year and negotiable the next. Fleet operators cannot choose vehicles confidently if tax treatment, charging grants and local restrictions change without warning. Nor can households be expected to make a large purchase on the basis of political improvisation.

Yet stability must not become dogma. Targets should be ambitious, but governments must acknowledge differences between urban and rural driving, between owner-occupiers and renters, and between a family car and a commercial vehicle. A resident of a remote village may have perfectly sound reasons for needing greater range and rapid refuelling. The answer is not to dismiss that experience. It is to develop alternatives at a pace that retains public consent.

The same applies to cost. Early electric cars were often expensive, and used buyers still worry about battery condition, insurance premiums and repair bills. Battery prices have fallen, but the market must demonstrate that cars can be repaired economically and retained for many years. Independent garages need training, access to diagnostic information and a supply of parts. A transition based on replacing serviceable vehicles too quickly would waste materials as well as money.

Electric transport is also an industrial question

The public conversation often stops at the charging cable, but electric transport reaches into mining, processing, engineering, software, ports and international trade. Britain cannot expect to control every part of a global battery supply chain. It can, however, make sensible choices about where to build capability: power electronics, vehicle design, battery research, recycling, charging equipment, grid technology and specialised manufacturing.

Supply chains deserve more scrutiny than they usually receive. Batteries require minerals, processing capacity and energy-intensive production. There are environmental and geopolitical consequences in each stage. Electric vehicles are not impact-free, and pretending otherwise invites justified criticism. Their case rests on reducing operational emissions and enabling cleaner electricity over time, while improving extraction standards, extending battery life and recovering valuable materials at the end of use.

This is familiar territory to anyone who has worked in international business. A product is never just the finished object displayed in a showroom. It is documentation, standards, components, shipping, finance, skills, regulation and trusted relationships across borders. The countries that benefit most from the electric transition will be those that understand this whole chain rather than merely importing the final product.

A quieter change than the headlines suggest

Some changes arrive with theatrical claims and then disappoint. Electric transport is likely to advance more quietly. More homes will have chargers. More supermarket car parks, workplaces and public depots will provide reliable power. Used electric cars will become normal choices rather than novelties. Buses, vans and local delivery fleets will often lead because their routes are predictable and their economics easier to calculate.

There will still be awkward journeys, poor charging locations and vehicle types for which batteries are not yet the best answer. There may remain a place for combustion engines, hybrids and other fuels for longer than campaigners on either side would prefer. Good policy accepts such distinctions without losing sight of the overall direction.

The sensible question for any buyer is not whether electric transport represents progress in the abstract. It is whether the vehicle suits the journeys, parking arrangements, budget and charging opportunities of the person who will use it. Make that judgement honestly, and the future will look less like a culture war and more like what transport ought to be: a practical means of getting where one needs to go.
