At Netheroyd Manor, a Yorkshire girls’ school, Headmaster Alexander James presides over a world of teachers, pupils, parents and staff whose lives extend far beyond the school gates.
There is Jayne Brown, his capable secretary, whose relationship with Alexander gradually becomes something neither originally intended. Around them are women building careers in a society that still expects marriage and motherhood to come first; couples recovering from the consequences of war; young people discovering love; and girls beginning to question rules that previous generations simply accepted.
Beyond Netheroyd, Britain itself is changing.
Food rationing ends. Farms move from horses and manual labour towards tractors and combine harvesters. Television enters the home. Motor cars become more common. Old industries change and mechanisation creates prosperity for some while threatening the livelihoods of others.
Against this changing background, the people of Netheroyd marry, separate, raise families, make mistakes, find companionship and discover that life rarely develops quite as expected.
Author Gerald Bratley was born in 1949 and grew up in a West Yorkshire mining community. Drawing upon his own memories of post-war Yorkshire—coal fires, gas lighting, outside lavatories, school discipline, buses, rationing, mining communities and the transformation of rural life—he recreates a world now largely disappeared.
