What an Electric Car Ownership Study Reveals

The useful question is not whether electric cars are the future. It is whether one fits the life you actually lead. An electric car ownership study ought therefore to begin not with official range figures or grand claims about saving the planet, but with the ordinary journeys that fill a week: shopping, visiting family, commuting, appointments and the occasional longer run.

After more than five decades of driving, including an earlier fondness for Jaguars, Daimlers and six-cylinder Volvos, I do not regard the move to electric motoring as a moral conversion. It is a practical decision. Now retired and travelling less far from home, an electric car suits my requirements better than the petrol cars I once enjoyed. That does not make it the universal answer. It is, as so often, horses for courses.

An electric car ownership study starts with the driveway

The decisive question for many prospective owners is not range. It is whether they can charge at home. A private drive, garage or allocated parking space turns an electric car into a remarkably convenient proposition. The vehicle can be plugged in when it is parked, rather than treated as something requiring a special expedition to a filling station.

This changes one’s relationship with fuel. Instead of watching the gauge fall and deciding when a diversion to the forecourt is necessary, the car usually begins the day with sufficient charge for its intended work. For local and medium-distance use, that is a genuine improvement in convenience.

Those without off-street parking face a materially different calculation. Public charging is improving, but availability, reliability, tariff structures and the practicalities of leaving a vehicle unattended all matter. A person living in a terraced street, relying on a nearby charger that may be occupied or out of service, is not having the same ownership experience as a suburban motorist with a charger beside the front door. Policy discussions often glide over this distinction too readily.

Home charging also makes running costs more intelligible, although not necessarily simple. Electricity bought overnight on a suitable tariff may be substantially cheaper per mile than petrol. Electricity bought at rapid public chargers can be much more expensive. The headline claim that electric motoring is cheap is therefore incomplete. It is cheap in the circumstances that make it cheap.

Range is a reserve, not a boast

Manufacturers naturally advertise the longest plausible range, measured under prescribed conditions. Owners learn to think differently. Range is affected by speed, temperature, road surface, hills, passengers, heating, air conditioning and the size of the wheels. Winter motoring, particularly on short journeys with a cold battery and a warm cabin, will not resemble a mild summer day.

This need not be a cause for anxiety. It simply calls for sensible expectations. A car that delivers considerably less than its published figure can still be entirely adequate if daily mileage is modest and charging is easy. Conversely, a car with an impressive official range can prove inconvenient if its owner regularly makes long motorway journeys without reliable charging at either end.

The sensible purchaser works from the longest regular journey, not from the average school run or weekly visit to the shops. If a journey of 180 miles is made several times a month, it deserves proper thought. One must consider where to stop, how long the stop will take and whether the destination offers charging. A 20-minute break may be welcome on some journeys and an irritation on others. Much depends on the traveller, the passengers and the timetable.

There is a tendency among enthusiasts to imply that planning a charging stop is no burden at all, while critics sometimes suggest that every long electric journey is an ordeal. Both accounts are exaggerated. On a well-planned route with dependable rapid chargers, long-distance travel is perfectly manageable. It is nevertheless less spontaneous than filling a petrol tank in five minutes, especially when chargers are busy or a particular site is not working properly.

The costs that deserve honest treatment

A fair comparison goes beyond the price of electricity and petrol. Electric cars have fewer routine mechanical parts than internal-combustion vehicles. There is no engine oil to change, no exhaust system and no conventional clutch. Regenerative braking can reduce brake wear. For an owner who keeps a car for several years, these are real advantages.

Against this, purchase prices can remain higher than comparable petrol models, though the gap varies widely. Insurance costs may be surprising, partly because repair procedures and specialist parts can be expensive. Tyres can wear quickly on heavier, high-torque vehicles if driven enthusiastically. Depreciation is also difficult to predict in a market where technology, incentives and second-hand demand are still evolving.

The battery is often discussed as though it were certain to fail suddenly and render the car worthless. In practice, battery degradation tends to be gradual, and modern battery warranties give some reassurance. Yet a battery is an expensive component and prospective buyers, especially in the used market, are right to ask about its condition, warranty terms and the vehicle’s charging history.

A disciplined ownership calculation should include the purchase price or finance cost, insurance, servicing, tyres, vehicle tax, home-charger installation and likely resale value. It should also distinguish between cheap domestic electricity and expensive public rapid charging. The result may still favour an electric car handsomely, but it should be based on the owner’s own figures rather than a generic advert.

Quietness is an advantage, but weight has consequences

The first impression of an electric car is often its quietness. Around town, the absence of engine noise and vibration makes driving more relaxed. Instant torque is useful when joining traffic or overtaking, although it can encourage brisk acceleration and rapid tyre wear if treated as a party trick.

Electric vehicles are generally heavy because batteries are heavy. Their low centre of gravity can make them feel secure and composed, but weight is not without consequences for tyres, suspension components and, in a broader sense, road wear. Nor should an electric badge be taken to mean that every model is environmentally identical. A large, powerful vehicle with an oversized battery consumes more materials and energy than a smaller, lighter one.

This is where the discussion benefits from restraint. Electric cars remove tailpipe emissions from the street where they are driven and can make a meaningful contribution to cleaner urban air. Their overall environmental case depends on manufacturing, battery production, vehicle size, electricity generation and useful working life. Keeping a suitable car for longer, whether electric or otherwise, is often more responsible than chasing novelty every few years.

Who should think twice?

An electric car is not automatically the best choice for every driver. People who cover very high, unpredictable motorway mileage, cannot charge at home and work to tight schedules may reasonably prefer a petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicle for the time being. The same applies where towing heavy loads over long distances is routine, since this can reduce range significantly.

A hybrid can be a sensible bridge for drivers whose use is mixed. It offers electric running for some local journeys while retaining the quick refuelling and long-range flexibility of an engine. It also brings the complexity of two systems, and a plug-in hybrid only makes environmental and financial sense if it is charged regularly rather than carried about as a heavy petrol car.

For a retired driver whose journeys are local, predictable and modest, the balance can be quite different. The electric car is quiet, easy to operate and inexpensive to run when charged at home. It requires less attention than many people imagine. One simply plugs it in when convenient and gets on with life.

The best test is not an ideological one. Keep a simple record of journeys for a month, note where the car stands overnight and identify the few trips that genuinely stretch the pattern. That small exercise will reveal more than any slogan. Choose the vehicle that makes your own motoring calmer, affordable and dependable, rather than the one that best supports somebody else’s argument.
